Year 5

Autumn Term

During this term we will be looking at map reading, where we will look at co-ordinates. Learn what the symbols on a legend stand for and be able to accurately pin point specific places on a map. Following on from this we will be looking at survival, and writing an 'Informative Leaflet'.

Our R.E. topic this term is Hinduism, to help us with understanding diversity, difference and culture.

We will be learning about the Anglo Saxons, and their invasion of Britain, we will also be incorporating drama to bring the story of Beowulf and Grendel to life.

During our 'Space' topic we will be looking at writing a complex narrative in the Sci-Fi genre as well as looking at the solar system.

We will then move on to 'Bread', we will start by looking at various different types of bread that are available on the market. There will be opportunity to taste and compare many different varieties, before we eventually design and make our own loaf. This will include a sales poster and slogan to entice you to purchase our tasty loaves.

Our final topic will be 'Winter', we will be looking at the poem Winter Time, by Robert Louis Stevenson, in great detail then we will write our own themed poem, which we will use: alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, personification and metaphors as well as rhyme.

Spring Term

Our first topic of the new year will be The Vikings, in which we will learn who these people were, what they came to Britain for and where they originated from. We will also learn to write using Viking Runes. We will write, a character description and story.

We will then look at the water cycle, learning more about evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We will follow a raindrop, falling to earth finding it's way into a river, and on to the sea before becoming a cloud and starting this cycle all over again.

We wrote some letters to Miss Merrit, you can read some of them below.
