Spring 2016

MP visit

On the 15th of April, Year 5 were visited by Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner, following on from our PSHE work about Parliament. We had the opportunity to ask lots of questions about what it is like to be an MP, and what Daniel does
to help the people of Cambridge. Year 5 asked many challenging questions, and got a great feel for what it is like to be responsible for so many people's wellbeing. We are very grateful to Daniel for coming to visit us.

Computing

Year 5 have been continuing with their exciting Computing work this term, and have learned about algorithms by programming a giant, robotic face. We have also begun to learn the Scratch programming language, using it to program ourselves some delicious pizzas. In the coming weeks, we will be creating more and more sophisticated programs and animations, using the concepts of sequence, selection and repetition.

Science Week - Rockets

During Science Week, we had a fantastic chance to apply our science knowledge and build rockets from scratch.

Firstly, we listened to the expert and then got into teams.

Secondly, we had to work in teams and follow the instructions carefully. We read, underlined the key words and discussed the terminology in our groups.

After that, we started cutting out and assembling our rockets from scratch. We ticked off each instruction to make sure we didn’t miss out any important

Next, we went outside to launch our rockets. We had to stand away from the launch site. It was amazing to see the rockets fly so high, and then see the shimmering silver as the parachutes slowed the rockets down.

Science Week - DNA investigation

During Science Week, we had the opportunity to learn about DNA.

Firstly we were introduced to the crime scene and we asked some great scientific, thought-provoking questions.

We found out about different types of finger prints and investigated our own and compared them to our partners.

After comparing finger prints, we followed the instructions carefully to collect our own DNA!

We had to use our equipment to collect the strands and carefully put it in test tubes.

Bread

Year 5 have had an exciting DT week, focusing on bread. We watched carefully as the teachers modelled, step-by-step, how to make the dough. We had to identify different cooking equipment and ingredients and we helped measure some ingredients like the salt and sugar, using a teaspoon.

We felt the texture of the dough and watched it rise and expand in a bowl throughout the morning. We learnt about key phrases like ‘proving the dough’ and ‘active ingredients’.

At the end of the day, Miss Donkin brought around the freshly, baked loaf of bread for everyone to try a piece.

We practised our Speaking and Listening by comparing this bread to the previous breads we tried on our Big Bang day.

Year 5 also had a fantastic time designing their own, healthy bread rolls.

Making our dough and adding our extra ingredients!

Our fantastic designs!
