DT - Autumn 2016

Nursery, So 2 Speak, Me 2 Club

In nursery the children have been exploring different ingredients and creating fantastic funny faces as part of their Tesco ‘Farm to Fork’ visit. They had the chance to handle different produce and were even able to touch fresh fish!

Reception

Reception have been busy cooking this term.  They had a visit from the Tesco’s Farm to Fork scheme, which enabled the children to explore a variety of fruits and vegetables and then they made some excellent faces out of the produce.  Reception have also been baking banana bread as part of their "Where does food come from?" topic.  They were learning which fruit grow on trees and which grow on the ground.

Year 1

Year one has been baking this half term and were set a magical challenge from Father Christmas! They had to create a new cookie flavour that Father Christmas would enjoy when he did his rounds on Christmas Eve. They weighed all the ingredients and practised beating and mixing to make the cookie dough. Father Christmas was very impressed!

Year 2

Year 2 have been making healthy wraps. They have learnt how to cut ingredients safely and how to create a product that is good to eat. They have also been to visit Tesco where they had the opportunity to taste a variety of food products and learn more about them.

Year 3

Year 3 were given the challenge of inventing a delicious but healthy pie. They researched and sampled existing pie products, learnt to make pastry, then designed their own pies based on what they had discovered. To complete the challenge, they held a ‘Great Year 3 Pie Bake Off’ where their pies were judged on appearance, taste and healthiness. The children then evaluated their own creations and finally (the best bit) ate them!

Year 4

Year 4 have been combining their DT and science skills to design and make a working night light. They have researched different types of night lights an identified the criteria for their product brief. They then created a 3D structure and followed their plans step-by-step, identifying any problems and rectifying them before they moved on. They used craft knives to cut out their designs and then coloured tissue paper to bring their lights to life. The end products were amazing!

Year 5

This term year 5 have been learning all about bread. They have looked at breads from around the world, named different breads and compared leavened and unleavened. They then tasted a variety of different breads and wrote reviews on each one. After immersing themselves in the world of bread, Year 5 had a go at baking their own bread. They learnt how to follow an instruction carefully and weigh out all the ingredients accurately.

Year 6

Year 6 have combined their DT and Art skills to craft working models of deck chairs this term. They have designed a comfortable but eye-catching deck chair for any age group who enjoy relaxing on the beach or in the back garden. They used a variety of wood working skills to create their scale models and used fabric pens to make their colourful canvas seats or slings. They are truly versatile and can accommodate Barbie, Action Man or even your mobile phone! Year 6 also had a challenge of designing a Christmas gift for a member of their family. They had to think about who their design was for, what they would like to put on the tree and whether their design would hang correctly. They then used embroidery thread and felt to create their presents.
