Reception

This term we have been busy using our imaginations to make design and make healthy fruit salads using fruits we know and some more exotic ones. We did some fantastic recipe writing to go with them too so anyone could make our salads if they wanted to. We had great fun learning how to prepare our fruit to put in our salad! We also made some fruity smoothies and got to drink them when we finished making them, yum!

Year 1

In Year 1 we have been looking at recycling and using scrap materials to make an exciting toy for us to play with. We had to design our toys after doing some research on the kinds of toys we could make with recycled materials, carefully plan what we would use to make each part, follow our plans carefully to make them, and then evaluate how successful it was. We also spent some time talking about the cost of making toys from recycled materials and the economic benefits of it.

Year 2

We haven’t been able to do much DT this term as we have been so busy preparing for our SATS tests, but are going to be very busy next term sewing and making things to go in our very own dens.

Year 3

This term we have been learning all about dinosaurs and so we decided to use our DT sewing skills to create a dinosaur scene. We created ‘Ugly Dolls’ using applique and different types of stitches to make arms, legs, horns, eyes and ears. They were hard to make but we really enjoyed the challenge, and managed to make all our dolls look like unique individuals.

Year 4

We had a focus on nets for our DT topic in year 4 this term, making Easter egg boxes that were big enough to fit Easter eggs in. We spent some time looking at different packaging, understanding what the features are of ‘good’ packaging and discussing what the nets are like for them, so that we could make sensible decisions for our own designs. Then we had to pitch our box designs to a ‘packaging company’ to see whose was most successful and appropriate. It was nerve-wracking but we saw and made some very persuasive pitches!

Year 5

In Year 5 this term, we had a mini DT topic on creating structures and making strong bridges. This was linked to our topic on natural disasters and Tacoma Narrows. We had to use newspapers to design and build a bridge for cars to cross with minimal costs, making sure the cars could actually get across! We had a go at rolling newspapers, creating triangle structures and corrugation techniques. Then we tested our bridges to see whose was the strongest.

Year 6

We have also been very busy preparing for our SATS tests this term so have not been able to do much DT yet, but we are planning some exciting things to do next term as a post-SATS celebration. We managed to complete a short DT project on ‘conker’ boxes, where we had to design and make a game with conkers that would fit inside a box that we created on Purple Mash.
