Spring 2017

So to Speak

In So to Speak they have been continuing with their cooking. This term they have been making fruit kebabs. The children have been learning how to cut their fruit up carefully. They have also had the chance to taste hot chocolate that was made over an open fire!

Nursery

In nursery they have been looking at the story of the three little pigs and they recreated one of the pig’s houses. They also had a go at making rain shakers. As part of their work about healthy living they made a healthy granola snack.

Reception

Reception have been learning how to manipulate different materials and have made a set of teeth out of clay. They also made pancakes to help celebrate Shrove Tuesday. The children also made some fantastic modelling representations of the sun moon and earth. They used split pins to make their models move.

Year 1

Year one have been making bags to carry their indoor shoes in. They started off by thinking about what their bag needs to be. This helped them to generate their design criteria. After that they made plans of what they wanted their end product to look like and came up with a list of equipment they would need. They then worked together to fold and glue the basic structure of their bags. They then added reinforcers and string handles to they could easily carry their bags around. Have a look at some of their finished products.

Year 2

Year two have made moving vehicles this term. They had to think very carefully about their designs, testing different wheels and axels until they found one that worked for their design. They also spent some time investigating different materials that they could use to protect an Easter egg that was going to be sent in the post.

Year 3

Year 3 have been developing their sewing skills by creating marionettes. They have researched, designed and made plant puppets which link to both their science and art topics. Everyone has practised running and overstitch, then has used their favourite to sew a funny flowery face for their string puppets. Next they will write short play scripts for their marionettes to perform.

Year 4

DT in Year 4 has involved a chocolatey challenge. They have been tasked with creating the most effective packaging for Easter eggs. After researching existing Easter egg boxes, the pupils have designed and created their own nets for boxes which have lids that open, are strong enough to protect the egg and still look attractive. They used Purple Mash to model their net designs and crafted them using paper and card.

Year 5

The Vikings may be coming, but have no fear, because Year 5 will defend us with their magnificent shields. They have designed wonderful wooden shields with leather handles, sturdy central bosses and hammered studs or nails to aid strength and decoration. Finally, they have been painted with suitably scary designs to frighten their enemies into submission!

Year 6

Year 6 are involved in an ongoing model making project to make beach huts. They have made detailed designs for the construction and decoration of their huts both inside and out. Some are retro, others more contemporary but all will be much sought after come the summer. To construct their models, pupils have had to be very aware of scale, practise accurate measuring and be adept at using a variety of tools.
