Reasoning in Maths

Reasoning means thinking and explaining mathematical ideas by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

At King’s Hedges we realised that to reason successfully pupils must be able to first verbally explain their reasoning then write it down. To support them we have introduced sentence stems and a reasoning progression.

Once pupils are ready to answer written problems we have introduced Reasoning in Green. So that children and adults know that any printed questions or pupil responses in green involve mathematical reasoning. Some examples of these questions include:
