Welcome to So to Speak 2

(w/b 6th September)

This week we have been settling in to our new classroom.  We got to know the names of our new friends and the adults that will be helping us with our learning.   We have spoken about the importance of being kind and why it is important that we follow our classroom rules.

All About Me

(w/b 12th September)

We have been learning all about our bodies.  We have used mirrors to look at our hair and eye colour and we have been talking about what we can do by ourselves.  We also shared what our favourite things are with our friends.

My Body

(w/b 20th September)

This week we have been learning all about our bodies.   We have learnt about our own skeletons and the job they play.  We then used our bodies to make different sounds and movements, copying what Miss Lacey was doing.  We learnt the names of different body parts and could label a picture together.  We explored how we can look after our bodies, washing our hair, cleaning our teeth and having a bath.

My Feelings

(w/b 26th September)

This week we have been focusing on our emotions.  We have explored feeling happy, sad, angry and scared.  We used mirrors and made our best smiley faces.  We then used paper plates to make our own smiley faces.   We also used a feelings wheel and tried to show different emotions using different facial expressions.  Our Friday cooking session saw us making our own smiley face biscuits.

My Family

(w/b 3rd October)

This week we have been looking at our own families.  We brought in photos of our families and shared hem with our class.  We discussed whether we have brothers or sisters and what we like to o with our family.  For our activities we made amazing photo frames for our family photos.  We also explored a story all about families and learnt signs to go along with key words.   For cooking this we we made gingerbread families!

Fun with Friends

(w/b 10th October)

In our theme this week we explored what it means to be a good friend.  We have learnt how to treat our friends with kindness and respect.   We explored lots of different activities that we enjoy doing with our friends.  During the week we learnt how important it is to take turns and place nicely with all of our friends.   In our activities for the week we made friendship bracelets and discussed who we are going to give it to. We then learnt how to play pairs with our friends.  On Friday we made a  fantastic tray bake to slice and share with our friends!

Autumn

(w/b 17th and 31st October)

During our autumn theme we started to explore what happens in autumn.  We learnt that leaves change colour and fall off of trees.  We also learnt about how to weather changes in autumn and it gets colder with more wind and rain.  We made our own leaf hedgehogs and used leaves to make leaf print paintings.  We even decorated our own Gruffalo cupcake!

Super Senses

(w/b 7th November)

This week we explored our super senses!  We talked about the parts of our bodies that we use for each sense.   We used our sense of smell and taste to identify a range of fruit and vegetable purees and we started to describe thing we could feel with our sense of touch.   We made popping lemon cupcakes this week and we also made our own sensory hands.

Pants Safety

(w/b 14th November)

We have had a week full of pants!  We've spoken about whether we use the toilet, potty or are in nappies.  We listened to the Pantosaurus song and learnt about the pants rule. We tried to put on pants over our clothes and developed our independence with this skill. We read stories all about pants and we even read a story about animal pants!  For our Friday cooking session we decorated pants biscuits.

Being Healthy

(w/b 21st November)

This week we explored what it means to be healthy.   We learnt about how eating healthy food keeps our bodies strong and eating too much sugar is not good for our teeth.  We looked at the importance of exercise in keeping ourselves healthy and how we need to brush our teeth twice a day. In our cooking session we made very colourful fruit salad pots that we could eat as a healthy snack.

Transport

(w/b 28th November)

This week we learnt that transport moves people from one place to another.  We learnt the names of different vehicles and how vehicles can move in varying ways. We explored vehicles that move in the sky and on water and we even identified different vehicles just by listening to the sound they make!  We decorated car biscuits, talking about the colour we wanted to use and putting on sweets for the wheels.

Winter

(w/b 5th December)

This week we have been learning all about winter.  The classroom was filled with snowballs and we have explored artic animals in the snow for one of our activities this week. Our imagination area was a cosy home corner with warm water bottles and blankets to keep us toasty! We have been talking about the clothes we wear in winter and helping the dolls to keep warm in hats, scarves and gloves. Our small world area had homes for snowmen and the children  practised their building skills as we made the houses bigger and taller with blocks. Our other messy activity this week was making fluffy snowmen and.  There was lots of painting and play dough exploration opportunities to develop fine motor and creative skills.

Christmas

(w/b 12th December)

Christmas had arrived in So 2 Speak 2 this week and the children had lots of festive fun, making decorations, cards and Christmas biscuits! The children explored the wrapping paper and found all of the Christmas characters and practised their imaginative play with our small world dolls house and Father Christmas.  There were festive puzzles, maths challenges and the home corner was a cosy Christmas kitchen with a tree to decorate.

Welcome to So to Speak 2

(w/b 9th January)

This first week was a short one! We were helping the new children settle in and letting them explore the different learning areas and the outside provision. We had a home corner to develop imaginative play, a small world school area and lots of sand to build with in the exploration area. The children experimented with paint and playdough and one of our activities this week was making a school uniform picture as we learnt about our school. Friday was cooking day and we decorated some school jumper biscuits for the children to take home and enjoy! We hope you all had a fantastic first week!

Music

(w/b 16th January)

It was very noisy in So 2 Speak 2 this week! The children were experimenting with the different instruments in the music den, making their own pasta maracas in the exploration area and learning about music and instruments from around the world in or small world area.  Our music teacher has been supporting the groups learning this week with lots of exciting songs and musical experiences to further their understanding of the magical world of music!

(w/b 23rd January)

We had a very colourful week in So 2 Speak 2 as the children explored mixing colours in the artist role play area and practised using lots of different materials to create their own art. We read the story of ‘Elmer’ elephant and learnt about our colours in the small world area with Elmer toys and books.  During our Friday cooking session we baked a delicious rainbow cake!

Dinosaurs (maths eyes)

(w/b 30th January)

It's dinosaur week!  We have been looking at sizes, numbers and practicing our counting skills as the children enjoyed our dinosaur theme. We had a dinosaur swamp in the imaginative area with hidden dinosaurs to encourage the children to develop counting skills. We learnt some fun songs about dinosaur numbers and colours and we ended the week by making dinosaur footprint biscuits.

The King's Pants

(w/b 6th March)

 

'This week in S2S2 we have been celebrating the King's coronation and learning pant safety with our theme book 'The Kings Pants'. We have been washing pants in our Royal laundry and exploring the small world castles and characters. We have also been talking about 'Pantasaurus' he shows us how to stay safe and keep our pants private.

Summer

(w/b 15th May) 

'This week So 2 Speak 2 have been learning all about summer! We have been making lots of pretend ice cream in our role play area and building sandcastles in our sandy rockpool! The children have made sunglasses and beautiful ice lolly art work this week and we have been talking about the different ways we can stay safe in the sun!

Minibeasts

(w/b 22nd May) 

'For the last week of half term we have been looking at minibeasts in So 2 Speak 2, we have been exploring their habitats in the classroom and outside during our bug hunting activities and have been building homes for the ladybirds too. The children have enjoyed making play dough minibeasts and stripy bee pictures and we finished the week making ladybird cupcakes'

This week in So 2 Speak 2 we have been learning even more about minibeasts and practicing our maths skills as we counted, sorted and measured the different bugs. The children have enjoyed playing in the water with the tadpoles and frogs and sharing the story 'The very hungry caterpillar' in the small world area.

Pets

(w/b 12th June) 

This week we have been learning about pets, the animals we have at home. We talked about our own pets and met Miss Lacey's dog Millie! We have been pretending to be vets in the role play corner, making all of the pets better and finding the hidden mice in our exploration area. We have made lovely pet masks this week and finished the week baking dog bone biscuits!

On the farm

(w/b 19th June) 

It has been a very exciting week in So 2 Speak, we have been learning all about farm animals and we had a visit from 'Gemma's farm'. The children loved seeing the animals and getting close enough to stroke them, it was a wonderful experience for them all. In the classroom we had our own farm with plenty of hay, toy animals and a tractor! We were cleaning muddy farm animals in the exploration area, developing imaginative play in our small world farms and practicing our singing with 'Old MacDonald had a farm.

At the Zoo

(w/b 26th June) 

This week we have been talking about wild animals in So 2 Speak 2 and what it might be like to go to the zoo! We had our very own zoo in the imagination corner, with lots of big soft animals to play with. Our small world area was a jungle with lots of different animals to find. Our exploration area was a sandy safari with cars and lots of different wild animals. Our activity this week was to move like animals and we practiced this with some animal yoga and we ended our week decorating biscuits with a stripey tiger print!

Under the Sea

(w/b 3rd July) 

It has been a very wet week in So 2 Speak this week as we have been learning all about 'under the sea'! We have been deep sea diving in the imaginative corner, searching for lots of sea creatures and we have been catching rainbow fish in the exploration area water tray. The group have enjoyed creative activities such as modelling with play dough, making collage fish pictures and colourful jellyfish too. We ended the week making tasty cheese starfish to share at home!
