Numberwork: an overview

At King’s Hedges Education Federation, we follow our own number work curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 which covers the required content for that year group.

Number work sessions are organised into one whole-class teaching session, one independent (application) session and an afternoon session dependent on cohort focus. Each one last for around 15-20 minutes.

The taught sessions are based around our mathematics purple threads (appropriate to the year group) and teachers follow the statements as they appear on the progressive overviews. The purple threads are as follows: number and place value, mental strategies, calculations, fractions, decimals and percentages, algebra. ‘Apply it’ (problem solving) and reasoning strategies are interleaved throughout.

All new skills are taught using ‘my turn, together, your turn’. Our curriculum is designed in this way to enable regular review and revisiting of concepts to aid long-term recall.  When a new skill is introduced, it is practiced alongside previously taught skills.

Work will only be given as independent work when the children have demonstrated they are fluent in the skill during carpet sessions. The independent sessions give children a chance to practice what they have been taught.
