Numberwork: an overview
At Kings Hedges Educational Education Federation we follow our own number work curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 which covers the required content for that year group..
Number work sessions are organised into one whole-class teaching session, one independent work session and one afternoon session. Each one last for around 15-20 minutes.
The taught sessions are based around the mathematical strands (appropriate to the year group) and teachers follow the skills as they appear on the overviews. The strands are as follows: number and place value, mental strategies, calculations, fractions, decimals and percentages, alegebra, ‘apply it’ work and reasoning strategies. All new skills are taught using ‘my turn, let’s do it together, your turn’. The skills are broken down, interleaved and taught daily to help the children remember them. When a new skill is introduced, it is practised alongside previously taught skills.
Work will only be given as independent work when the children have demonstrated they are fluent in the skill during carpet sessions. The independent sessions give children a chance to practise what they have been taught.
Afternoon sessions cover a range of different skills including mental maths, arithmetic and problem solving and reasoning.
